Every year, more than 2,000 patients from Hawaii’s neighbor islands travel to Hawaii’s leading neuroscience facility on Oahu to seek specialized neuroscience care at Hawaii Pacific Neuroscience (HPN). This is at least 10% of the more than 20,000 patients who are being cared for at HPN.
Since March 2020 COVID travel restriction, HPN specialists and providers have made significant sacrifices to travel to Big Island to provide care to these patients to ease their burden of travel.
GREAT NEWS – As interisland restrictions ease, patients are finding it easier to travel to Oahu. HPN will be implementing the following expansions of services to meet the needs of our Neighbor Island patients.
1) QUALITY – “ONE STOP SHOP”
To provide high quality multidisciplinary neuroscience specialty care on Oahu so they can have easy and timely access to services not available on neighbor islands.
Comprehensive fully integrated neuroscience team of neurologists, physiatrists, geriatrician, sleep specialist
Ground breaking research options (previously only available on Mainland) FREE to qualified patients
Onsite (often same day) full array of diagnostic capabilities including EEG, EMG, Sleep Studies/PSG, MSLT, Cognitive Capacity Evaluations, close by 3T MRI/Imaging facilities.
2) CONVENIENCE (Clinic Adjacent to Airport & Dedicated Neighbor Island Care Coordination)
Because we are sympathetic to the burden bear by patients and caretakers to travel to Oahu, we have taken the following steps to ease the burden by:
Established a dedicated Neighbor Island Care Coordination (NICO) dept. and staff to ensure our patients’ interisland flights, ground transportation making their travel easy and without hassle.

3) COST & TIME EFFECTIVE (Same day service)
In most instances (not all), testing completed SAME DAY followed by clinical care by onsite specialists is a significant cost and time savings for both patients and payers to avoid having to return back to “go over results of testing” and a win-win for all!
Effective August 20th, 2021 HPN specialists will no longer be providing services on Big Island to ensure they have access to convenient, high quality and time & cost-effective care on Oahu as interisland travel restrictions are lifted making it easier for them to fly to Oahu.
