Multiple Sclerosis in Hawai'i: Different presentations & treatments than on the mainland

How is multiple sclerosis (MS) in Asian, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islanders different from MS on the US Mainland?

Findings suggest:

  • Different clinical presentations such as more frequent spinal and optic involvement – How is it different from neuromyelitis optica (NMO)?
  • Need for different clinical approach in Hawai’i’s population (Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) higher cell and proteins with 40-55% negative for band, fewer MRI brain lesions).
